Hey pet parents! Today, I'm sharing one of my favorite tools for keeping your dogs entertained, happy and calm during pet sitting visits -- the licky mat!
I use this all the time with many of my dog clients. They just LOVE it! You can see some of them in the video below! Sometimes I use the cat licky mat for dogs. Haha. You'll see that in the video.

What Are Licky Mats?
Licking is known to help release endorphins which aids in calming a pet. Licky Mats are designed to utilize this on a simple mat to provide mental stimulation and relaxation for dogs and cats through licking.
They are usually constructed of flexible food-grade silicone or rubber and can be smeared with soft foods like peanut butter, yogurt, or wet food. They come in different shapes and textures with various nooks & crannies. It’s a tasty, time-consuming challenge that keeps pets engaged.
Note: If you’re using peanut butter with your dogs, make sure it’s xylitol-free since that is toxic to pets even in small doses.
Why I Love Using Licky Mats
In my pet sitting business, I swear by licky mats. Usually at the breakfast or midday visit I'll slather these mats with peanut butter and stick them in the freezer. When I return for the bedtime visit, the dogs are treated to a fun, delicious treat. You don’t have to freeze them. A lot of times I don’t because I forget. But freezing them will make them last longer.
When my client’s dogs see me preparing the Licky Mats they get so excited. It’s so cute. Check out some of them in the video below.
Versatility Beyond Treat Time
Licky mats are great for various situations:
- Bath Time: Does your dog dread baths? Distract them with a licky mat spread with their favorite spreadable treat and stick it to the side of the tub with the included suction cups. Turn bath time into a more enjoyable experience.
- During Stressful Times: This can help during stressful times like thunderstorms, fireworks, or any other time your dog is anxious.
- Distraction During Alone Time: Leaving your pet alone for a bit? A licky mat can keep them happily occupied, reducing boredom and potentially destructive behavior.
- A Fun Treat: Simply put, this is just a fun way to give your dog a treat. I love watching them enjoy it!
If you're looking for a simple yet effective way to enrich your dog's day, consider incorporating licky mats into their routine. They're easy to use, provide mental stimulation, and offer a tasty reward that dogs love. It's a small investment that pays off in wagging tails.
